The meaning behind Lumini

Lumini Behaviour Support is inspired by the Latin word lumen, meaning light. For us, it reflects the heart of good behaviour support: helping people make sense of behaviour, understand what may be happening beneath the surface, and find a clearer way forward.

The name also holds personal meaning for our founder. Her son’s name, Lucas, means “the one who brings light”, and that idea sits closely with the purpose of Lumini Behaviour Support. We aim to bring clarity, compassion and practical direction to situations that can feel complex, stressful or difficult to understand.

About Lumini Behaviour Support-

Real-life moments matter — our focus is on support that works in everyday environments.

At Lumini, we minimise unnecessary administrative processes so we can focus on what truly matters — spending time with people, building skills, and working collaboratively with each person’s support network.

We believe behaviour support should not sit in a drawer. Our work centres on implementing practical strategies in everyday environments, ensuring support is flexible, responsive, and meaningful.

We work alongside individuals, families, and support teams to understand why behaviours of concern are happening and what supports positive change. Through practical guidance and training, we help build safer routines, strengthen connections, and improve participation in daily life.

As a small team of like-minded practitioners, we take the time to understand the whole person and their environment. Our work is guided by evidence-based, non-aversive strategies and a strengths-based framework that promotes dignity, choice, independence, and meaningful participation.

Our practice is intentionally not driven by KPIs. This allows us to work in ways that are truly individualised and responsive to change, ensuring each person receives support that is genuinely tailored to their needs.

The Lumini difference

Our approach

Evidence-based strategies

Support is guided by evidence, clinical reasoning and a clear understanding of the participant’s needs, environment and support network.

Non-aversive strategies

Support is guided by evidence, clinical reasoning and a clear understanding of the participant’s needs, environment and support network.

Practical strategies that work

Plans and recommendations are designed to make sense in real daily routines, so families, carers and support workers can use them with confidence.

Our history

Over 20 years in complex behaviour support

Lumini Behaviour Support brings more than 20 years of experience in behaviour support, with a strong background across the criminal justice sector, restorative justice, drug and alcohol support, Aboriginal communities and complex adult presentations.

This experience has shaped a calm, practical and person-centred approach to behaviour support. It allows Lumini Behaviour Support to work thoughtfully with participants whose needs may be layered, high-risk or difficult to understand at first glance, while helping families and support teams build a clearer path forward.

Why we exist

The Lumini mission

When someone is distressed, overwhelmed, unsafe or unable to communicate their needs, behaviour can become the clearest signal that support is not working as well as it could.

We help you look beyond the behaviour itself, understand what may be driving it, and build a clearer way forward.

How we work

Thoughtful support for complex situations

Behaviour support often involves more than one issue, setting or relationship. Lumini Behaviour Support takes the time to understand the full picture before recommending strategies, plans or next steps.

This means looking at the participant’s environment, communication, risks, routines, support network and history, so the support provided is practical, respectful and genuinely useful in everyday life.
